Net Neutrality, was a concept developed to keep the internet flowing at a steady constant, without discrimination of any kind based on gender , race, country or any other forms of segregation or identification that would alter service or price instead of keeping it all equal.
Putting speed limits or toll booths on the internet in my opinion is not only about the money. With pending legislation wanting to end Net Neutrality, the internet will have two lanes of traffic. Fast, which will be expensive and slow for everyone else that can’t afford it.
What can we do to stop it? Everyone sent in comments to the FCC 3.7 million to be exact, and after examining only the first 800,000 only one percent were opposed to Net Neutrality. This is an obvious representation of class warfare, the 1% making the rules for the 99% if this legislation passes. What’s worse is that everyone is actually paying attention to this topic and it is very clear that the majority of Americans find this absurd and almost punishment like behavior from our politicians for even considering this.
What is the true purpose behind this form of internet kidnapping? Who stands to benefit from a change like this and who doesn’t? These are the questions we need to be asking and most importantly pay attention to the companies that are promoting this switch. Just look at Time Warner and Verizon spending in excess of $100,000,000 to lobby congress in favor of the destruction of Net Neutrality. They would like to treat your internet bill like a utility, the more you use the higher your bill goes. These are the lighter aspects of the change if it was to occur. If you are limited to the amount of time you can spend online, to the cost increase then that limits your abilities to grow a new online business, do extensive research or even run your own blog. This is a very serious issue that will effect everyone in some way. I have a feeling that even though the vast majority of internet users do not want this change to occur, some form of compromise is going to pass. This is because of what I said earlier, it’s not all about the money. The internet gives power to the people. We have demonstrated this many times in the last five or six years as protest became globally organized, regime changes were made in Egypt and alternative media is just starting to get more powerful as millions are starting to wake up and pay attention.
If Verizon gets what they are wanting put into law then they will become a new level of powerful corporation. They will have the option to charge you extra money to go to popular websites like YouTube, Facebook or charge you more for watching Netflix online. Basically they will make or break companies and with that ability to control traffic online, they could easily buy up failing internet companies due to this and then charge extra money for anyone trying to go to a competitor. They could slowly start taking complete control over the internet if Net Neutrality gets taken down or even compromised with. Our politicians need to stand firm and protect our internet freedoms that we seem to take for granted.
